Rehabilitation of the Historic Whorlton Suspension Bridge

22nd October, 2024
The Whorlton Suspension Bridge, a key piece of British engineering history, is undergoing a significant transformation thanks to the efforts of VolkerLaser.
In this complex and carefully coordinated project, the entire suspension and deck structure will be dismantled, fully refurbished, and reinstated, ensuring that the bridge retains both its historic character and functional integrity. After a brief pause in works due to a bat discovered in the Toll House, the necessary bat license has now been issued, allowing progress to resume. The project has already reached a significant milestone, with the carriageway removal nearing completion.
Durham Lifting has been providing vital support to the project, with the supply of temporary steel supports essential for dismantling sections of the bridge. These supports help stabilize the bridge structure as it is disassembled, ensuring the safety of the crews working to restore each intricate component. In addition to the temporary steel supports, we have supplied specialized rigging equipment to handle the unique requirements of this structure. Handling a suspension bridge is no small task; every element, from load distribution to weight balancing, must be carefully calculated to maintain structural balance.
Our rigging solutions were custom-tailored to the needs of this historic bridge, demonstrating our commitment to delivering precision-engineered equipment that meets even the most challenging demands. One of the next critical steps in the project involves testing the integrity of the bridge’s original steel members. Using our extensive testing capabilities, we will soon conduct load tests on the existing steel components to determine whether they meet the necessary strength and safety standards.
The Whorlton Suspension Bridge rehabilitation project is a significant for the local community who cherish this historic structure. Since its opening in 1831, the bridge has served as both a functional crossing and a beloved landmark, steeped in the heritage of County Durham.
We’re excited to support the revitalization of this vital link so it can continue to stand proudly for future generations.
